How will Intuitive Eating help me?

The majority of us struggle with food in one way or another, and it's not the way things are supposed to be. Whether it's just feeling guilty and uncertain when sitting down to a meal, or suffering in the grips of a full-blown eating disorder...it's a problem that is all too common in our culture.

Why is dieting so common? Why is it impossible to escape the water-cooler talk about the latest nutrition advice? Why is it ok for people to so easily judge and comment on what others are eating? It's so ubiquitous that it's become acceptable and you may not even notice it. 

Intuitive Eating is all about getting back to the basics. I like to think of it as a way to dismantle all the rules and restrictions and guidelines and "shoulds" that we have built up over the years, and return to the essential aspects of eating. Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full, exercise in ways that feel good, rest when you're tired...it doesn't seem that complicated, but all those fundamental concepts are usually buried beneath a sea of what-we-think-we-should-be-doing.

We have tons of highly palatable food available almost all the time AND we have tons of very compelling ideas about how our bodies should look...and things have gotten really complicated. If we just listened to our bodies' signals, and had no external influences, we wouldn't struggle. The problems start when we get an inkling that we should be a little bit different, that our thighs are a little too big, that we'd look a little better in that dress 5 pounds lighter, that we'd have a better relationship if we were a little thinner, or that our very HEALTH is on the line!

Suddenly we start turning to others for advice--diet programs that will help us lose weight, nutritional advice about how to "melt fat" or the best times of day to eat. And those little voices that are trying to tell us what our body needs start to get ignored, and our natural biological signals get disrupted, and before you know it, we're on the diet-binge roller coaster and can't figure out how to get off.

Through Intuitive Eating, you can begin to challenge your thoughts about food, start respecting your body's signals again, eat thoughtfully and consciously, and rebuild that trust in yourself that has gradually been eroded by dieting. Intuitive Eating is truly a way to liberate yourself from this toxic culture and make your way back to a peaceful, calm, trusting relationship with food and your body...kind of like it was when you were a toddler and still thought your body was pretty awesome and didn't worry about how many cookies was too many.
