What the Hell is Manifesting?
What Does Manifest Even Mean?
When used as a verb, manifest is how something appears or becomes clear; how it becomes apparent. When we talk about manifesting goals, it’s the process by which your thoughts, feelings, and desires show up in your physical presence.
So if I say I want to manifest more money, it means that I’m going to focus my energy on bringing more money into my presence. If I manifest a new car, it means that a new car showed up in my life as a result of my thoughts, feelings, and desires. If I manifest something I don’t want, like more debt or a fight with my husband, it means my thoughts and feelings were focused in a negative way, and I attracted more negative experiences.
I used to be really confused about how to manifest. It seemed like this magical process by which you can just get things by thinking hard enough. It’s been a huge relief to begin understanding the actual scientific reasons that deliberate manifestation works, and how to follow a reliable process to create the kind of life I want.
Understanding the Law of Attraction
I’m not a physicist, so I’m sorry if I gave you that impression. This is the way I understand the science of this process, in lay terms: everything in the Universe vibrates on a certain wavelength. Similar wavelengths are attracted to each other. Your thoughts and feelings have their own vibrations that attract similar vibrations.
So...when you think positively and feel good, your thoughts and feelings go out into the Universe and attract matching vibrations, which brings more good things into your life. When you think negatively, and feel bad (stressed, angry, resentful, regretful, fearful, etc.), your thoughts and feelings attract circumstances to create those energies into your life
You don’t have to look very far to see evidence of this in your life. You’ve had those days when you wake up in a foul mood, and things just seem to get worse and worse throughout the day. And then you say things like, “When it rains, it pours!”
Or you see someone in your life who’s happy and friendly, and seemingly gets everything they want handed to them on a silver platter, and you think, “She’s so lucky. Why is everything so easy for her and difficult for me? Life is unfair.”
Or I’m sure you can think of someone who suffers with health problems and just seems to have terrible luck, and they think and speak about their negative experiences to anyone who will sit still long enough to listen (thus perpetuating the negative cycle).
The Law of Attraction is always working, even when you’re not aware of it. So you may have accidentally attracted a shit-ton of negative experiences into your life, because you didn’t understand how your thoughts and feelings were creating your reality.
The great news is that now you know, and you can learn how to focus your thoughts and feelings in a positive way and transform your life, starting TODAY!
But How Do You Actually DO It?
Putting this knowledge into practice was a huge source of frustration in my life. I was trying so hard to stay positive in order to attract good things, but was constantly distracted and sabotaged by the challenges of my daily life. For a long time, I would start each day feeling great and motivated, and then slowly turn back into Negative Nelly as I marched through the daily grind of kids, bills, work, grocery shopping, vacuuming, and everything else.
I was so used to thinking negatively, and you probably are, too. We don’t even realize we’re doing it, when we complain about our boss, or criticize someone’s appearance, or worry about not having enough money in the bank, or judge something our sister did, or blame our parents for our problems. Feeling and thinking negatively is so common, we usually don’t even recognize it.
There’s incredible freedom in knowing the simple reason why your life doesn’t look the way you want it to. But the process of becoming a positive person who attracts good things like a magnet isn’t always as easy as it seems. It’s comfortable and familiar to complain. Our brains are wired to anticipate danger and imagine the worst case scenario. And even though you may understand now what you need to do, actually doing it can be incredibly difficult.
It’s not about white-knuckling it through terrible situations with a smile plastered on your face, or pretending everything is fine when it isn’t. I thought that for a long time and ended up creating more of a mess for myself because I was actually ignoring things that didn’t make me happy.
The Mindset-Energy-Action Balance
The keys to manifesting effectively are focusing your thoughts on what you want, developing the feelings of having it already, and taking tangible, inspired steps toward your goals. So, manifesting is a combination of managing your mindset (the way you think), focusing your energy (the way you feel), and taking action to make forward progress (what you actually do).
In addition to thinking positively and feeling good as much as you can, you’ve got to show the Universe that you are serious about changing your life. That may mean doing things that you find unpleasant, like removing negative influences from you life, or finally sitting down and figuring out how much you actually owe on your credit cards. The real lesson is learning how to navigate those unpleasant tasks and experiences with the deep, unshakeable belief that you’re on the right path and everything is always happening as it’s supposed to.
My Core Truths
What really accelerated my progress was developing some core truths that I can always return to when I am feeling challenged. These are things I know to be true, that I feel deep down in my belly, and that bring me great comfort even in my darkest times. When I started repeating these affirmations to myself on a daily basis, I started feeling optimistic and powerful about my ability to create my dream life.
The Universe is always supporting me. Even when I feel alone, even when things really suck, I know that my success is inevitable. Having this faith has allowed me to glide through some pretty incredible challenges with a sense of calm.
Everything is happening for a reason. When I began to understand how the Universe is always orchestrating events and circumstances for my greatest good, even if I couldn’t see HOW it was working, I started to embrace every experience I was having (and realize that resistance was probably the most negative force in my life).
There’s always a lesson to be learned. It’s liberating to see every painful experience or challenge as a Master Class from the Universe. Now when things don’t go the way I’d prefer, I can feel grateful that I’m learning and growing and being provided with lessons that will serve me well later in life.
I am safe. This simple mantra has allowed me to calm down that primal fight-or-flight response to everyday stress, and remember that everything is going to be fine.
I’m the one creating my reality. There’s no judgemental dictator sitting in the clouds grading my behavior. There’s no one else to blame for my circumstances. I don’t have to prove I deserve the things I want. The keys to creating my ideal life are harness my energy, continue moving in a positive direction, and work through my fear and doubt.
I can have anything I want. I’m allowed to dream as big as I can, and get excited about absolutely anything that brings me joy, and create any kind of life that appeals to me. Everything is available to me, and all I need to do is BELIEVE and work through my doubts and fears.
There’s tangible work to be done. I love visualizing, and journaling, and praying, and tapping, and reciting affirmations, and imagining my greatest success (all the mindset and energetic work), but I also take concrete action. I feel the energetic shifts when I declutter my home, when I keep on top of my finances, when I cross things off my To Do list, and when I physically move myself closer to my goals.
Everyone is on their unique and perfect journey. I no longer waste my energy criticizing others or being influenced by them when I don’t want to be. I can embrace interactions that magnify the energy I want, and ignore anything that threatens to derail my journey (like the guy who just cut me off in traffic or the family member who lobs an unsolicited judgment across the table at Thanksgiving).
Ugh, There’s So Much To Do!
Learning about all this can feel really overwhelming at first, so I completely understand if you’re thinking “Where the hell do I start?”
A great place to begin is simply getting really clear on what you want. Have you ever taken the time to sit down and really list your goals, being really specific and clear, as if a waiter is standing in front of you taking your order? This can be a really fun activity and will certainly motivate you to get started.
The next step is to identify the way you think accomplishing those goals will make you feel. Are you looking for security, freedom, joy, safety? Will having those things make you feel happy, successful, or proud? Getting clear on the energy you wish to create is the key to making it happen as quickly as possible, because....
You can start creating that energy in your life right now. Once you feel the energy of having it already, you will be attracting what you want like a magnet. How can you create security and freedom in your life right now? Is there anything that’s creating negative energy in your life that you can resolve? How can you start being consistently happy and optimistic right now?
