What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation, similar to meditation, where your subconscious mind becomes more accessible and suggestible, thus allowing new ideas to be introduced without the conscious mind acting as “gatekeeper.”

Your conscious mind is the part that you have control over. It’s the critical, thinking part that can analyze information, develop strategy, and make decisions. Your conscious mind protects you and is resistant to change.

Conversely, the subconscious is obedient and adaptable, and automatically responds to instruction. Hypnosis is a way to communicate directly with your subconscious, and easily create new habits and thought patterns.

 

How can hypnosis help me?

You’re probably able to identify at least one thing in your life that you’d like to change -- whether it’s smoking, out-of-control eating, relationships, self-esteem, feeling overwhelmed or anxious, time-management, or any other challenge. You may have tried to change these behaviors time and time again, but feel stuck and unable to improve. You may have even developed a negative story about your behavior: you lack will-power, you’re not good/smart/strong enough, you’re lazy, or you’re incompetent.

Your subconscious mind is where the old patterns and stories are stored that are dictating your undesired behaviors -- and that’s the part we need to access in order to facilitate change. By calming or distracting the conscious mind, we can access the subconscious and suggest new patterns and new stories that will result in more productive behaviors.

Hypnosis is a solution-oriented modality, so we will focus on your goals rather than your problems. Once I get a clear idea of your challenges, we will shift to identifying the ideal outcome and spend our time working toward that. Once your subconscious is on board with the new way of thinking, your behaviors and feelings will shift effortlessly in pursuit of your goals.

Can you fix my problems in just one session?

As with anything, the length of treatment depends on your history, how long you’ve been struggling with the specific issue, and your personality type. Many times, a short-lived, rather simple behavior change can be accomplished in a relatively brief treatment period, but other issues may take longer. Hypnosis is exciting and effective, but it’s not magic. We’re still working with the reality of changing deeply held, perhaps very old, beliefs and fears.

Hypnosis is a relaxing, pleasant experience, and you may find that having regular sessions can support your ongoing personal development. It’s a form of support that many people find very appealing.
